#1 UFO Challenge for February

February's challenge quilt is done for the month. this was not an older project at all. i actually started it just a few weeks before the first of the year. quilted with lime green Glide on top and So Fine dark green in bobbin. it's about 70x90"

This was done by tube piecing. sew the 3 strips together into a tube and cut the blocks. i saw this on someone's blog and had to give it a try myself. i really need to quit starting new projects on a whim or i'll never get all those UFOs finished.

You get 2 blocks with each cut...mirror images. it was hard to decide on a design to set this with. i used EQ to decide.

The back was 5 different fabrics pieced to fit. these are the main 2 fabrics. they were all dark green. good for stashbusting.

I quilted around each block and across the middle seam. large Xs in the 2 smaller borders... to match the size of the blocks. and in the final border i went down the center of the fronds. sometimes just once...sometimes back and forth...depending which side i was trying to get to.

This will be a donation quilt. nothing too exciting about it....but it is rather bright.

Now to take my last few days of the month to do a few other projects so i'll be ready for March's number when Judy pulls it.

February's Pallette...finally....a plan

I have the February Pallette for our challenge from Vicki W and Judy L.  it is a picture of figs. good thing someone told me what they were....i didn't know.

There are 10 colors...quite a bit. but i didn't have much trouble pulling my fabrics. they are...right to left...pear, lime, grass green, avocado, nutmeg, coral, paprika, berry, raisin, black. these are Kona solids.

Now...the design. whooo!!   i worked on it for a while a few days ago and had to quit. i couldn't decide and couldn't come up with something that i really liked. in the back of my head i kept thinking bargello....i've never made one.  might be fun since it will only be about 18x24.

So today i got back in EQ to review what i had....and deleted it all. LOL   and came up with this.

There are 8 blocks and i reversed and turned and switched to get the pattern....and gave myself a headache in the process.  i printed it out and will paper piece each block. i sincerely hope i have marked them correctly. i have no margin for error. i only have a FQ of each fabric. Arrrkk!!

I really want to get started on this but actually need to finish up a couple other things first. i am leaving it at the studio when i go to the house so i am not tempted to start it tonight. hahahaha

I have a couple things at the house that need attention first. AND...my home and harvest hand applique is sitting in a corner waiting for me, too. i am once again getting in the 'too many ongoing projects' mode. got to finish up a couple so i have some breathing room.

So, off to the house to sew and have some dinner. hopefully there is dinner ready....and the super bowl didn't suck the cook into the game. LOL

February Section for CQJP

I am finished with the February Section of my crazy quilt for the CQJP (Crazy Quilt Journal Project).

I am liking these large sections and think it is going to be one awesome quilt....not to mention large and heavy. LOL

Here is the actual February block

And some close up sections of it. here is the main focus....a lovely Victorian lady surrounded by lace and rickrack and some beads. scrunching up that lace and stitching it down was the pits....just sayin'

Love this little crocheted starflower that i found. with orchid silk ribbon inside.

Had to put this little bunny button in the flower garden. i braided some yarn there on the bottom. and stitched over the leaves in the fabric to the left of the bunny. made those little purple flowers behind the bunny with waste canvas. i have just discovered that and like using it. it does take a bit of getting used to though.

A gold heart shaped button with more trim and embroidery embellishment. that was a gold velour ribbon that i tacked down with the rickrack shaped trim on the edges...then added french knots to the trim...then added X's to the ribbon....then put silk ribbon under the Xs....then added french knots to the Xs.  got carried away. the piece of velour ribbon will be the last thing standing on this quilt....it is stitched down GOOD.  LOL

A gold filigree trim tied down with some silk ribbon and a bit of embroidery fern. right above that is some blue rickrack with orched embroidery thread down the middle. .... then tiny tack down stitches of pink in the middle of that. i think i like layering. hahahahaa

Some silk ribbon flowers and a tiny purple dragonfly bead. the leaves are a trim that i bought. the flowers i just made up as i was stitching.

This was a rather large beaded earring that i found in a thrift store...LOL...it's about an 1" across. but the purple, green and gold beads just seemed to fit. and a bit of white trim with red decoration on it. then i added some red stitches to that with embroidery thread.

And here are the blocks surrounding the encrusted middle block. I just add a piece or 2 of embellishments to these blocks. this one has a white piece of trim with cute little tassels.

I was in Jackmans Fabrics last week and found a basket in the upholstery department with bits of trims on sale for 25 cents each. that is where this little bit of purple trim with tied tassels came from.
This one has a large piece of lace dyed dark blue in the corner. it reminds me of a spider web and if i can find a spider button i will add it there.
This one has some dark blue rickrack and a piece of purple lace. i dyed all my pieces of lace to match the squares.
More rickrack and a tiny bit of flowery trim right above the blue floral batik in the center
Piece of light purple gauzy ribbon on the bottom left and another dark blue trim on the right
More dyed laces
In the top right corner is a blue sort of crocheted net piece. i found that at the Upcycle Exchange place. it was part of a sample card with different colors and styles of netting. rather unusual. look for more of these pieces in future blocks. also a bit of purple lace. and some tiny red velour rickrack in the bottom left corner.

I like this section better than January, i think. i kept going back and adding more. i don't know if it is the crazy quilt 'way'....but the more i add...the better i like it. is that a bad thing?  ahahahahaha

I am currently working on the March block....it is red, orange and gold. will be an eye opener for sure.  get your sunglasses ready.

Keep stitchin' and be happy...talk to ya

It started out as Violet...

JudyL's pick for the monochromatic challenge for February was Violet. uummmmm....i don't have a lot of violet. sorry, Judy, it STARTED out as violet but didn't get very far so we just moved on to shades of purple....and lots of purple selvages.

At least the top is done and i have 2 weeks to get it quilted.  i think i can...i think i can

Here is a close up of a light block....yep, those are all selvages on the corners.

And here is a darker block.

I wanted to use only the selvages without the white part on them. except in this block they were really narrow...so that was ok. but in the last 10 dark blocks i had to get creative and fold the white under. that was a bit time consuming.

And i have no excuse for the wild sashing....i just like it. and it DOES have purple in it...honest....look again...........look harder.  it DOES.

Might need to slow the clock down some for this month....i have a lot on my plate and the weather is not helping.

Back soon....i hope.
