Crazy Quilt Journal Project...top done!

There is an online crazy quilt project being done this year....each month you make a crazy quilt block and submit it online. i am done early....and, of course, i had to be an over-achiever and made 9 blocks each month. one was extensively embellished and the other 8...not so much....just seam embellishments and some buttons and beads...maybe some embroidery. i finished all the blocks for the year and pieced them all into a top....sheesh that sucker is heavy.

Set 10x11 blocks....blocks finished at 9 1/2"...so top is now 95x104 1/2".  what a quilting job that will be.

Some blocks are extensively embellished and some not so much.

This was a fun project...and although i think i won't do any more crazy quilting for a while....i do have a white/cream crazy quilt ongoing....a couple dozen blocks are already done. and i have an idea for another crazy quilt....my brain just won't stop.  anyone know how to clone themselves?....i need an assistant.

I hope to get this quilted sooner rather than...

Crazy Quilt blocks for October

Just because i haven't been blogging....doesn't mean i haven't been busy. it means we haven't have internet service for about a week....we had a storm and a lightning strike...again....and were having problems every other day....the phone people came out here....several times...we wound up with a new modem 3 different times....and i think we finally have all that problem solved. fingers crossed!

Here are my crazy quilt journal project blocks for October. i thought orange would be appropriate.

These have more embellishments on them than previous month's blocks.

But i am going to go back and add to some of the other blocks from previous months, too.

Of course, this quilt will probably weight about 50 pounds.

I better not use it when i am old and feeble....it will suffocate me. hahahahaha

But as i was working on it i decided i have WAAAYYY too many embellishments still....and will add more to previous blocks to use them up.

I am trying to use up fabric stash, thread stash, button stash and embellishment stash. i better live a long time yet.

We won't even talk about the paint stash...or gourds....or whatever else is in the closet that i haven't seen in a while.

But i am really enjoying the hand work....surprised myself there.

Novembers blocks are blue.  at least i managed to stay ahead of myself on this project. perhaps by the end of the year all the embellishments will be on all the blocks and i can actually assemble this monster.

I already have too many blocks for 1 quilt....so this will be 2 quilts. there will be 108 blocks when all are done....10" blocks. maybe 90 for the first quilt and then a wallhanging or just make more for the 2nd quilt.

His and hers heavy monsters. LOL

It's September!!

No....i haven't lost my mind.....it's wandering....but not lost yet.

And, no....i haven't figured out how to time travel....but that might not be bad....i could get away from these 100 degree days.

What i'm talking about is that my crazy quilt blocks for September are finished for the Crazy Quilt Journal Project.

Here is the main one that will be sent in to show. i went with black fabrics this time. and added some white and grays, too.

Added some little heart buttons on this bit of lace.

And some bees to visit the flowers

Had to have a dragonfly. and i found some leftover labels from the label quilt.

A cat seemed appropriate, too.....and another label

A pile of buttons and one more label....with my token fuzzy picture. LOL

Here are the other blocks to go with it....block 2 got a few buttons, too.

Block 3...i've been wanting to use that lace frame for a bit. how about that tape measure trim?

A few more buttons and a tassel

Block 5 got some repeats of the tape measure trim, flowers, and trim piece.

Just had to throw that rose in there for a red pop.

Block 7 has 2 little gold hearts and a silver charm...i think it says spirit .... if i remember correctly.

Block 8

Block 9

One of these has a black tassel on it....but i can't see it in these pics. black and white is hard to photograph.

I haven't a clue what i shall do for October...might need another bright color like red or yellow.

I've been working on a lot of selvage blocks so the next crazy quilt blocks might not get worked on till a bit...

August crazy quilt blocks

August blocks are yellow....because August is sunny and hot.   the pictures in the middles all come from a piece of fabric that i found somewhere. i cut out the pics of the animals....it looked like scenes from a circus or a zoo.

Here is the first one that i decorated more for the Crazy Quilt Journal Project. can you tell there is an elephant in the middle? and there are little, tiny stars in the upper right corner...going across on the lace. in the bottom right corner by the embrodiered fern is a tiny bee. the piece above the elephant is a kind of woven canvas.

This block has 2 girls trying to feed a goat. how about that vine with golden leaves...reminds me of Jack and the Beanstalk. LOL

This one has a couple of zebras. above the zebras is a piece of cheesecloth...doubled. i found that at a thrift store...it was the skirt of a kind of voodoo doll. i do find some strange things.

This has a boy with a hoop. the upper gold 'chain' is a particularly thick type of braid. i love the lace flower basket. and those tiny orange and yellow flowers on the braid on the left is just cute.

Can you see the deer laying behind the fence...at least i THINK it is a deer. another cool lace medallion....with a tassle hung from it..... just because i could.

This one shows a girl with a hoop....perhaps she is playing with the boy. the top shows the last of my fringe that i used on my cowgirl shirt for a friend. and that little piece going across the left upper corner is the last of that ribbon.

These look to be grape vines growing on a pole. some glittery golden lace on the upper left and more of those orange and yellow flowers.

A boy standing on a bridge...looking at a swan. even more orange and yellow flowers...i have lots of that.

Can you see the monkeys in the cage? there are 3 ladies and a little girl watching them swinging around. just had to add the yellow and black graphic piece on the left.

I have so many trims and scraps...i'll bet i can make thousands more crazy quilt blocks.  this quilt will have 108 blocks. so there will be many more crazy quilts. i think i will try black for the September blocks. i don't think i have done that color yet. we'll see how that goes...have to go dig out my black fabrics.

See ya...

May Crazy Quilt Journal Project

I have finished the May section of my CQJP. this one took a while...it kept getting set aside for other things.

Here are the other 8 blocks that go with it. they did not get extra embellishments as i did in previous months. i may still go back and do that.

I don't seem to have as many purple scraps as other colors.

I had mislaid these for a while. they got covered up with other projects and never got worked on again. when i was ready to put them all together...i couldn't find them.

I started to make more...and after the first re-do...i was SURE i had made them already....just had to find them.

Finally uncovered where they were hiding. so, no further embellishment for now. hopefully, later.

Here is the section all together. it is all dreary and rainy here today so i had to lay it out on the deck to get a half decent picture.

It is not my favorite out of the bunch....maybe it's the purple. couldn't get 'into' it like the others. gotta get my mojo back. LOL  i think i will do the next month in neutrals.

Gotta go play with fabrics and see if i can find the mojo. talk to ya

April Crazy Quilt section

As promised, here is the completed April section for my crazy quilt. a few browns and blues mixed with the greens.

Block 1 .. some cone flowers for the center...some tiny pale green rickrack for the left side and some dyed green lace for the right. and a small lace round floral at the bottom.

Block 2 .. this center was rescued from a thrift store. it is hand embroidered and trapuntoed. 2 beautiful birds feeding their babies. it was in a wooden circular frame when i found it. there is some dark brown lace clusters at the top...look like grapes to me. LOL  and a brown wired ribbon bow at the bottom with a tiny metal heart over the 'knot'.

Block 3 .. this little basket of flowers in the middle was a piece of fabric that i had in the stash. Some tan rickrack at the top..a pale green ribbon on the bottom left and a dyed light green lace on the bottom right.

Block 4 ... another scenic piece of fabric from the stash. light green rickrack above the picture... wide black velvet rick rack on the right...and some green see through lace on the left..over a piece of velvet fabric.

Block 5 ... the middle crazy block. I think the birds in the middle inspired the birds in the other blocks. did you notice that cute little black cat..down at the bottom...by my initials. you can't have birds without a cat. hahahaha

Block 6 .. fishing lures in the middle..LOL...wide dyed green cotton ribbon at the top, with dark green embroidery french knots holding it down. some dark green lace trim on the bottom left and a piece of white satin ribbon on the right..that really shines here.

Block 7 ... look at this cool bird i got on a piece of fabric from a friend. love that feather tail. some dark green picot lace at the top...green trim to the left...and a bit of light green lace at the bottom right.

Block 8 ... had to include that cute little donkey with the hat. LOL  notice the piece of camo fabric above that. the upper left corner got a piece of dyed doily...tacked down in various places with dark green embroidery thread. and under that a piece of brown velvet ribbon. and a piece of brown and red trim at the bottom right.

Block 9 ... the sunflower block. more fabric from the stash. actually..this was from an Aunt Sophie piece of fabric. and the lovely tasselled trim at the top. this is the same piece as is on the middle block...i just left the tassels on this one. some green dyed lace under the sunflowers and some pale green lace on the bottom left.

So, there you have it. April is done...and February isn't over yet. i love that i am so far ahead of schedule. of course, about July i might be that far behind schedule. LOL

It takes about as long to sew down the trims as it does to construct the blocks. i have to go and dig out all the various colors from various sources throughout the house and studio. and then put them all back when i am finished. i have stuff everywhere. i like to think i am organized....but i can do better.

I am going to the big bad city on Thursday...with a visit to JoAnns...and some time at the Duck . i hope to find some organizational boxes at Joanns to help me out with my plethora of goodies. and, weather permitting, get a dumpster delivered so i can empty all the demolition crap out of my garage...for the second time. i believe there will be 1 more dumpster load to go before it is all said and done. it's amazing how much stuff you tear out when you are taking a house down to the studs.

If i do anything exciting before I leave on Thursday..i'll be sure and show you. otherwise, you'll probably hear from me again ... when i am back from the Duck...
