Crazy Quilt blocks for October

Just because i haven't been blogging....doesn't mean i haven't been busy. it means we haven't have internet service for about a week....we had a storm and a lightning strike...again....and were having problems every other day....the phone people came out here....several times...we wound up with a new modem 3 different times....and i think we finally have all that problem solved. fingers crossed!

Here are my crazy quilt journal project blocks for October. i thought orange would be appropriate.

These have more embellishments on them than previous month's blocks.

But i am going to go back and add to some of the other blocks from previous months, too.

Of course, this quilt will probably weight about 50 pounds.

I better not use it when i am old and feeble....it will suffocate me. hahahahaha

But as i was working on it i decided i have WAAAYYY too many embellishments still....and will add more to previous blocks to use them up.

I am trying to use up fabric stash, thread stash, button stash and embellishment stash. i better live a long time yet.

We won't even talk about the paint stash...or gourds....or whatever else is in the closet that i haven't seen in a while.

But i am really enjoying the hand work....surprised myself there.

Novembers blocks are blue.  at least i managed to stay ahead of myself on this project. perhaps by the end of the year all the embellishments will be on all the blocks and i can actually assemble this monster.

I already have too many blocks for 1 quilt....so this will be 2 quilts. there will be 108 blocks when all are done....10" blocks. maybe 90 for the first quilt and then a wallhanging or just make more for the 2nd quilt.

His and hers heavy monsters. LOL

O63.....Bingo!

Usually i don't name my quilts but i think this one needs a name. it's name is O63.  O is for orange...the color of the month for Judy's Monochromatic Challenge. and 63 for my age. and O63 is a valid Bingo number...i used Judy LaQuidara's pattern titled Bingo Whirl from her book titled Weekend Quilts. This pattern is quick and fun....i recommend it. here is Judy's quilt

Here is the front of mine. i took a couple of liberties from the actual pattern because of the amount of fabrics i had. mine is much more scrappy that Judy's is.

The blocks are so easy to piece...just rectangles. i would use this pattern again.

And i think making it scrappy worked, too. as long as there are only 2 colors in a block it gives the look of Judy's.

Love the pieced border. that, too, was quick and easy.

There were 6 borders on this quilt....but each added to the overall look and were necessary. i love how the striped border cuts off at the corners and seems to curve around.

The backing was a piece that i got from Wilma at her end of bolt sale. go check her out at www.christianlanequilters.com    fabulous fabrics. and wonderful customer service. the piece i got wasn't quite large enough for this quilt so i pieced another piece of orange in the middle.

I loved this orange backing....it is so happy looking and i like the dots on it.

I quilted it with a pantograph called Blooming Feathers by Anne Bright. i use that one a lot.

All in all, i like my orange challenge quilt and love the pattern i used.

Now i have 10 days before i leave town to get the other challenge quilted up....#4. it's going on the frame today.

I think i want to go to the VFW.....O63...Bingo!!

Orange Bingo Whirl

I finished piecing my Orange Monochromatic Challenge top this morning. i even used a Judy Laquidara pattern from her book...Weekend Quilts. it is called Bingo Whirl.

This is a great book...there are 3 more quilts in here that i want to make.

I took a few liberties in Judy's pattern. mine was scrappy and the background fabric didn't go in border #5 to match...i didn't have enough. and i made the final border 5" instead of 4".  but i used a lot of orange.....it was easy and quick to piece.  now i just have to get it quilted in the next 2 weeks.

I like the way this border....the striped one....turns the corner.

And i like the pieced border, too. shoot...i like it all.

I even have an orange backing. it wasn't quite wide enough so i inserted another orange fabric down the middle.

I will quilt it all with orange thread and it will be delicious.

What if...

What if you had a bajillion orange selvages....

What if you cut them into 10" strips....and sewed them together...

What if you trimmed them into 9.5" squares....

What if you put all those blocks together and made an orange quilt.

Let's see how many blocks i can make from a bejillion orange selvages. then i will decide if the quilt will be all orange or if i have to add other colors with it.  i don't have a LOT of orange.

But i do have a LOT of blue and green...enough to make quilts to cover Texas.

What if you slept at night instead of dreaming of selvages.

Stay tuned.
