August crazy quilt blocks

August blocks are yellow....because August is sunny and hot.   the pictures in the middles all come from a piece of fabric that i found somewhere. i cut out the pics of the animals....it looked like scenes from a circus or a zoo.

Here is the first one that i decorated more for the Crazy Quilt Journal Project. can you tell there is an elephant in the middle? and there are little, tiny stars in the upper right corner...going across on the lace. in the bottom right corner by the embrodiered fern is a tiny bee. the piece above the elephant is a kind of woven canvas.

This block has 2 girls trying to feed a goat. how about that vine with golden leaves...reminds me of Jack and the Beanstalk. LOL

This one has a couple of zebras. above the zebras is a piece of cheesecloth...doubled. i found that at a thrift store...it was the skirt of a kind of voodoo doll. i do find some strange things.

This has a boy with a hoop. the upper gold 'chain' is a particularly thick type of braid. i love the lace flower basket. and those tiny orange and yellow flowers on the braid on the left is just cute.

Can you see the deer laying behind the fence...at least i THINK it is a deer. another cool lace medallion....with a tassle hung from it..... just because i could.

This one shows a girl with a hoop....perhaps she is playing with the boy. the top shows the last of my fringe that i used on my cowgirl shirt for a friend. and that little piece going across the left upper corner is the last of that ribbon.

These look to be grape vines growing on a pole. some glittery golden lace on the upper left and more of those orange and yellow flowers.

A boy standing on a bridge...looking at a swan. even more orange and yellow flowers...i have lots of that.

Can you see the monkeys in the cage? there are 3 ladies and a little girl watching them swinging around. just had to add the yellow and black graphic piece on the left.

I have so many trims and scraps...i'll bet i can make thousands more crazy quilt blocks.  this quilt will have 108 blocks. so there will be many more crazy quilts. i think i will try black for the September blocks. i don't think i have done that color yet. we'll see how that goes...have to go dig out my black fabrics.

See ya...

The Roosters are Crowing

This rooster fabric was rescued from my friend, Maralie's garage sale last summer. i finally decided to use the rest of it up. so i cut blocks of roosters and flowers. it came out about 60x70". the blocks are 5.5" finished.

The alternate blocks are yellow selvage squares.

The only 'rule' i gave myself was that each square had to be the same selvage. so i could only use longer selvages that would fill up a square.

Sometimes there were enough selvages to make a square but there were several pieces...different widths. so, some blocks have thin pieces of selvages and some have thicker. and some have some of both. LOL

I was running out of yellows...so had to use some golds, beige and 'almost' yellows. that's ok...it's my rules.

The green is another Maralie sale fabric.

The back was pieced with the green of the border and the last of the rooster fabrics.

It would have made it easier for me had the rooster design people put those blocks in a straight line instead of staggering them. some of my roosters lost their feet in the cutting process and some baskets lost their bottoms.

It will be a donation quilt somewhere. i quilted it with my Quiltazoid templates with Bright Neon Yellow Glide thread on the top and a green Bottom Line in the bobbin that matched so exactly i could hardly see it on the back.

Another bit of stash used up. now to go and pull more stash to piece the next backing. it will be wild, i think. i'll let you see it

Yellow is #1

If you are playing along with Judy LaQuidara's 2011 Monochromatic Challenge then you know that the color for January was Yellow.

I now have my yellow quilt all finished. it's not very big...but finished is better than big. it 48x48.  kid size. i used stuff from the scrap box and selvage box. i think i will do selvages on all the quilts for the year if i can. will considerably cut down on the selvage boxes.

What do you think?

Here is a closeup. i like the selvages with the fuzzy edges...like the one in the top right corner...can you see it? these really go so fast that you can piece this many blocks in a couple nights.

I used 3 different yellows for the background parts and didn't plan the placement of them. it was truly a quickie. but i like it and think it turned out cute. and it got a quick panto for quilting and it is done.

The backing is another piece of Aunt Sophie stuff. i think in it's former life it was a sheet.

I think if this quilt had a name it would be Drunken Geese....they are flying every which way. LOL

Now i can hardly wait for next month's color...which will be pulled on Jan. 31.

Yellow monochromatic top is finished

I am playing along with JudyL's monochromatic quilt challenge this year. for January we need to make a YELLOW quilt. my top got finished today. so i am starting out the month well...2 days to get the first challenge done. of course, it still needs to be quilted to be 'finished' but i can do it. it is about 50"x60" and will get a fast panto and be a donation. i used scrap yellows for the background and cut 8" blocks. then put yellow selvages on each block from corner to corner to cover half of it. put a column of flying geese going up and one going down. and some flying randomly in the middle. camera is at the studio so i don't have a pic right now but will show you when it is quilted.

I feel good to have the top done.
