Hara

Hara in India means green. And April is the green challenge month.

The pattern came from Preeti....she is from India....she did hers in blue....which is Neel in India.

This is her pattern

Here is mine

It was a bit confusing to keep all those pieces together in the right place.

The stars

The secondary design

I am glad that is finished....who knows when it will get quilted.

Now, if I can stay away from the squirrels.....I can get on to something else green.

Elementary Jelly Roll

I was doing pretty good on my Green challenge stuff for the month.....then....a squirrel....Sunday I was looking at Mary Johnson't blog and she was making a quilt that looked pretty easy....so, I had to stop what I was doing and make it.

She made it with a Jelly Roll, and I just happened to have one in the studio.

So...ta da!!

Elementary Jelly Roll...it's about 48x56"

Mary's had all the same background fabric but I just paired up the Jelly Roll strips with dark and light.

I tried for the same fabrics in each block, but different colorways...and that worked for the most part.

I made 1 too many blocks so I was going to piece it into the back. I also had a handful of leftover pieces. So, I sewed the leftovers into one long strip and pieced it around and around the leftover block. I went around 3 times. So, now I have a larger block to piece into the back of the quilt.

The only piece left over from the Jelly Roll was a piece 2.5 x 4".  It went into the scrap pile. I used almost every inch of fabric.

Apple Core

I don't know how long it has been since I finished a quilt.....but, it has been a long time. And this one is not even mine. haha

This top was hand pieced by a friend's mom's sister. it was a bit wonky and has every kind of material known to man in it. haha  It's about 80x86".

The hand piecing was done with thick thread. That blue fabric that looks like denim was kind of thick and did not stretch at all. That light blue with the white next to it stretched a lot.

Not all places matched up well and it was not pressed. the black with the white dots had runs in the fabric. A lot of the pieces had creases sewn in.

There was no way to SID so i stitched over the top layer of each seam as they usually lapped over. I didn't fight the creases.

From far away, it all looks fine. haha

Some fabrics didn't stretch at all....and they were next to very stretchy fabrics.  sigh!!

The back is a muslin

I used Bottom Line Ivory for the top and the bobbin.

The binding was a supreme pain in the butt. There are lots of creases in the binding to make up for the curves. I sewed the binding down, then sewed around it again to make sure everything was caught in the stitching. It's not pretty, but it's finished.

Weekend progress

I was at my sister's for the weekend....babysitting the dogs....and this is what I accomplished.  It was like a little quilting retreat.....with dogs. haha

Friday, April 3....I made

22 ten inch selvage blocks.

That used most of the selvages...and all of the base fabric that I had cut and brought with me. So, final total on the selvage 10" blocks was 71 of them.  I hope I miscounted and I actually have 72 so I can set them 8x9....if not, I will have to make 1 more.

After that, I started some crazy quilt 6.5" blocks...adding lace and trims...and made 5 of them.

Saturday, April 4...I worked on more crazy quilt 6.5" blocks....adding lace and trims.....I made 28.

Then I switched to crumb blocks....using up small bits of selvages....and made 5 of them.

Sunday, April 5...I continued with crumb blocks...and had a productive day and made 52. These go really quickly, so that was easy.

Monday morning I came back home, so no sewing yet today....maybe later.

There are still lots and lots of green bits and pieces and scraps....and a few handfuls of selvages.

Let's try this...

For April's Color Challenge...the color is green. I thought I would record what green things I work on throughout the month. I'll try to report in a couple times a week. Here are the first two days.

OK...I confess....I actually started my April green the last day of March. haha

These are 10" selvage blocks...  I made 15

April 1 ... I made 10

There are a LOT of green selvages, so I hope to make at least 48 to make a top that is set 6x8.

Back to sewing.
