Mermaids

These blocks are applique, done with the embroidery machine, on April 27, 2013. i incorporated a lot of blues and greens for making the top.

It is 60 x 76"

If little girls still like mermaids...i have the perfect quilt. haha

The jellyfish looks like a Sunbonnet Sue bonnet. LOL

It's harder to know how to set 10 blocks...so, 2 'blocks' are blues and greens from the stash. sadly, i still have some of these fabrics....3 years later.  sigh!!

The back is part of a fatback from another project....now all used up.

The panto is Whirlpool by Sharon Spingler

Top thread, as usual, was an aqua Glide; bobbin was So Fine Christmas green

thread.jpg

After having to rip out the first foot of stitching and use a different thread, it went quickly. binding is the same fabric as the background of the embroidery blocks.

Wonder what's up next....hope it's fun.

Garden Flowers

This is another strippy, scrappy. this time, it was 'let's get rid of some of these floral fabrics'.  by March 23, 2013 i had the blocks made....but, it took till June 1, 2013 till i got the top together. and then, another 3 years to get it quilted. but it is now done.

front.jpg

It was a quick quilt....i did X's across the row in each block and then did CC in them, too. it meant going down each row back and forth 4 times, but it still went quickly.

close.jpg

The strip blocks all have the same brown print in the center....and each side matches. i was trying for something different and had never done that before.

strippy block 1.jpg

The quilt is 84x100.  The border was a wavy piano key....which i also did as i did the rows of blocks. i never cut the thread to move anywhere. kept on going till i ran out of bobbin. it took about 8 bobbins. on these utility quilts, i don't knot and bury threads....just do a few stitches in place and carry on.

strippy block 2.jpg

The alternate blocks are from some large floral fabrics that i had...who knows from where.

floral block.jpg

The back is from my stash. several years ago this line came out and i saw some patterns made with it and loved it. i had 2 or 3 patterns to make. needless to say, never used it. so, i finally decided to just use the fabric and forget about the quilt i bought it for. i wasn't that in love with the patterns any more anyway. funny how time changes everything.

back.jpg

back close.jpg

Top thread was a peach Glide, bobbin was a gold So Fine.

thread.jpg

It's not anything spectacular, another utility quilt, but any one out of the to-be-quilted cabinet is fine with me. next up is a smaller kids quilt that will get a bit more attention.

Changes to Comments

For some reason......comments have not been posting.  i believe i have this figured out now......so, comment away.  hahahaa

Strippy, Scrappy, Crazy quilt from hell

I finished piecing this on May 28, 2013. had i known how much trouble it would give me....i might have thrown it out then. this was surely the quilt from hell....and it is not even pretty. good thing trash day was yesterday and not today or it would be out on the curb right now.

I emptied out the red, purple and black scrap boxes....cut everything into strips of various sizes.....sewed them all together willy-nilly into larger strips....and cut out 6" blocks....then put all those together.  this is how you make an ugly quilt. haha   no rhyme or reason.

Anyway, on the frame it went yesterday....wanted really simple fast quilting...so decided to just do lines across....with the channel locks...simple...right?

front.jpg

It is 76 x 94"

close 1.jpg

There is no pattern of quilting or color of thread that was going to show here anyway

close 2.jpg

It will just be an utility quilt

close 3.jpg

I used muslin for the back.....and some Signature variegated thread called Southwest...no problems at all with that in the bobbin. i quilted lines across of various heights.

back.jpg

So, i'm quilting along....lines back and forth.....every once in a while...a little hitch in the get-along....for my amusement. then....i get about 8 inches from the bottom...WTH...*&*$#)(@....i loaded the backing wrong and it is too short. for a moment i thought of quitting there and just cutting the bottom of the quilt off. but then i would lose the border. so, i unpinned, took it all off, cut some muslin off the side to add to the bottom.  well, i'll do that tomorrow. went home to stew about it.

hitch.jpg

So, this morning i come to the studio....stitch the 2 pieces of muslin together to lengthen the back....put it back on the frame....pin...roll....quilt. i start to quilt and .... WTH ... *((#$($*%*@@(.....i didn't pay attention to how i sewed the extra on...and the seam is on the OUTSIDE of the quilt.  well, just bite me.  once again i think about just cutting it all off. but, no, we'll just quilt it and figure it out later. i am NOT taking that all back off and re-doing it.

oops.jpg

So, after quilting, the fix i came up with was just to make some extra binding and sew it over the 'oops'.  I will swear it is just an artistic element of the back. LOL

ooops fix.jpg

This is the binding that i used....bits and pieces of stuff to use up from the stash.

binding.jpg

And the thread....bright red Glide for the top and the Signature Southwest variegated for the bobbin.

thread.jpg

If there was an ugly quilt contest around...this might just win. i will give it to my son....they have lots of dogs....make a good dog blankie.

ABC123

Another finish...woohoo!!

After i took the neutral crazy quilt off the frame i immediately set up this one....then decided to just quilt one row....before i knew it....it was finished.  haha   i just did wavy X's through the blocks.

front.jpg

I finished piecing this on July 9, 2013

close 1.jpg

I was using up pieces of novelty fabrics

close 2.jpg

And practicing the making of letters and numbers

close 3.jpg

The 'pattern' is just something i made up

close 4.jpg

It is rather bright....but kids like bright

close 5.jpg

This might have to go to a St. Louis Cardinals house  haha

back.jpg

I don't even remember where i got this....it is a fleece.

back close.jpg

Bright red Glide for the top....bright blue Bottom Line for the bobbin. and you can't really see the blue thread on the back...it just sinks in.

thread.jpg

Oh, it is 58x63"...a bit large for a kid quilt but it can be a couch/nap quilt.

Neutral Crazy Quilt

This is about 105" square. my goal was to use up my neutral crazy quilt fabrics..lace...trims...a few buttons, etc.  it has machine embroidery, hand embroidery, pieces of linens (handkerchiefs, tablecloths, pillow cases), and anything else i had. I actually pieced this thing years ago....maybe 5 years. happy to see it done

front.jpg

middle.jpg

The middle heart is a crazy quilt pattern from my friend, Mary Boushie.

The backing fabric was chosen by my sister because it is going to live with her at the Beast. i used leftover backing fabric for the binding, also.

back.jpg

Top thread was Glide bright white and bobbin was Bottom Line, a yellowy tan...to match. it took a LOT of thread...i think, 13 bobbins.  i just SID in the smaller blocks.....SID in the larger blocks....sometimes going around beads and buttons...and put a little something in the larger pieces. Oh, and i broke 2 needles.

Final border is a swirl with feathery type things....next border in was feathers....inner border was swirls. so, things quilted in the larger blocks were the same things as the borders.

It was on the frame a long time and i am happy to be done with it. i had some issues with the final border being wavy and i took 2 folds....but i have no one to blame but myself, since i pieced it. haha

Now...on to smaller quilts....that will be done quicker. this finishing up UFOs is really getting behind schedule. But....i will start next week. i'm off to the Duck for a few days.
